The final phases of a $4.8 million runway resurfacing project at LF Wade International Airport has been completed.

The project ensures durability and meets international aviation standards, a Skyport spokeswoman said.

The rehabilitation works were primarily focused on the repaving of the runway keel, with focus on the aircraft wheel paths on either side of the runway centreline.

The project was undertaken by East End Asphalt Ltd and Lagan Aviation and Infrastructure Ltd.

Randy Rochester, the chief executive of East End Asphalt Company Ltd, said: “Phase 2 may have been shorter, but it demanded the same dedication and effort.

“Our team put in long nights to ensure a first-class product for the Lagan team.

“This project is one of the largest EEA has undertaken in recent years, showcasing the skill and commitment of our workforce.”

He thanked Duck's Puddle Community as well as several private trucking companies for the support they provided.

Malachey Doyle, the Lagan project director, said: "The weather presented challenges with heavy winds and rain, but we persevered to complete the project on time.

“The quality of materials from EEA and the collaboration with Skyport made this Bermuda project particularly rewarding. It's an experience I will always cherish.”

Aaron Adderley, the president of Skyport, said that the completed works marked a significant milestone for the airport.

He said: “These upgrades ensure the runway meets the highest international standards.”

Mr Adderley said the project was part of over $630 million in required maintenance and capital expenditures on the airport’s terminal building, cargo facility, parking lots, runways, taxiways and aprons.

Skyport is committed to cover the life of the project’s concession agreement, he said.

He added: “The seamless execution of the runway resurfacing, with minimal operational disruption, reflects the outstanding teamwork of Skyport, East End Asphalt and Lagan Aviation.”
