A total of 26 customs officers have been recognised for their long service.

Those who have served in their roles for between five and 35 years were acknowledged by the customs department during its Long Service Awards at Customs House on Front Street last week.

Wayne Furbert, the Acting Minister of National Security, said during the ceremony: “We not only recognise the years you have devoted to this noble profession but we celebrate the unwavering commitment, sacrifice and resilience you have demonstrated in protecting our borders, ensuring national security and upholding the integrity of trade and commerce.

“Over the years and decades, these officers have stood as the first line of defence, ensuring that our country remains safe from illegal activities, that our economy thrives through fair trade, and that the people we serve can go about their daily lives with confidence.

“Yours is a duty that often goes unseen, yet it is indispensable.

“You have witnessed the rise of technology, the shifts in economic power and the increasing complexities of international trade, adapting with skill and determination to meet every challenge.

“You are not just officers, you are guardians. You are not just enforcers of laws, you are protectors of trust.

“Every day, you ensure that fairness prevails, that safety is upheld and that our nation continues to prosper.”

He added: “We thank you for standing firm in the face of adversity and thank you for the sacrifices you and your families have made in service to this country.

“May you continue to find purpose in your work, strength in your mission, and pride in knowing that you have made a lasting impact.”

Cindy Pearman, the Collector of Customs, said the officers’ commitment and hard work were “invaluable”.
