A charity walk in aid of people in hospice care will take place on February 12.

The fifth edition of the Friends of Hospice moonwalk, which was an annual event before the coronavirus pandemic, will start and finish at Chaplin Bay.

The charity said funds raised at the event will go towards its programmes and services, which support people in hospice and palliative care, along with their loved ones.

Starting at 6.30pm, participants will walk to and from Horseshoe Bay as they remember and celebrate lost loved ones under the moonlight.

The route will be illuminated and the mood will be set with musical entertainment from Hayley Cann, a music therapist, and Warwick Academy’s upper primary choir.

Inferno Arts Bermuda will hold an LED lighting show at the event and a reading will be given by Avril Hassell, a longstanding volunteer.

The charity is requesting a $15 donation per walker, where possible, however it encouraged those who cannot afford the fee to also attend.

Donations can be made at the event itself or online at friendsofhospice.bm/donate.

Jennifer Mahoney, the executive director of Friends of Hospice, said: “We are so pleased to be putting on the moonwalk again — we know this is an incredibly special night to so many in the community.

“We encourage those who haven’t joined us before to come out and experience the beauty of the South Shore under the moonlight and support a cause that has helped so many.”

Nicky Gurret, a volunteer, said she was pleased with the return of the event and she added: “There is nothing else like it.

“It is such a special event to walk under the full moon, gazing at the stars on Bermuda’s beautiful South Shore beaches and sand dunes, remembering loved ones who have passed.”

She said she will remember her father, the late Eddie Gurret, whom she noted was a fantastic chef.

“It has been 15 years since he passed, and I will be thinking of him with much gratitude and love — as I often do,” she added.
