Sorority marks MLK Day by giving back to the community
Members of the Bermuda chapter of a US university sorority marked Martin Luther King Day by volunteering to help residents at a nursing home.
A team from the Sigma Xi Omega chapter of Howard University’s Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority spent January 20 at the Matilda Smith Williams Seniors Residence, providing entertainment, companionship and acts of kindness.
As part of AKA's commitment to uplifting communities and advancing social justice, the event aimed to brighten nursing home residents' lives by preparing toiletry hampers that included essential items such as socks, toothbrushes, deodorant and more.
Necheeka Trott, the president of the Sigma Xi Omega chapter, said the group was honoured to celebrate Dr Martin Luther King Jr's “We Are One” day of service by giving back to those who have contributed so much to the community.
She said: “Dr King taught us that life’s most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?
“As members of Alpha Kappa Alpha, we take that charge seriously and we were proud to serve the residents of Matilda Smith Williams Seniors Residence.”
Ms Trott said that the sorority had been a prominent community partner with Matilda Smith Williams Seniors Residence for a number of years, and continued to foster a positive relationship with the community at large across Bermuda.
