Interruption to public services tomorrow for union meetings
Public services will be disrupted tomorrow owing to a pair of scheduled union meetings.
A government spokeswoman said a full membership meeting of the Bermuda Industrial Union is to take place from 10am to 11.30am, while the Bermuda Public Services Union will host a general membership meeting between 12.30pm and 2pm.
Cherie Whitter, the Head of the Public Service, said: “We understand the inconvenience this may cause to the community.
“However, we wish to assure the public that the decision to hold these two critical union membership meetings was not made lightly.
“It should be stressed that these membership meetings are the culmination of months of joint interest-based bargaining negotiations between the unions and the Public Service Negotiations Team, led by private sector co-chairs.
“Heads of departments and the unions are singularly focused on minimising the impact on public services and will ensure a swift return to normal operations.
“With the exception of public transportation, most front-facing services will remain operational.”
The government spokeswoman confirmed that there will be no bus or ferry service tomorrow morning during the BIU meeting.
“Members of the public are encouraged to seek alternative transportation arrangements during this time to avoid delays.”
The spokeswoman added that other delayed services were expected to include trash collection, parks and postal delivery.
The BPSU meeting is also likely to result in “delays or disruption to some of the Government’s front-facing public services”.
Ms Whitter added: “We thank the public for their patience and understanding.
“The dedication and commitment of our public service employees are invaluable, and their voices are essential as we work collectively to enhance the lives of the people of Bermuda.”
