The Customs Department welcomed 20 trainee officers last week.

A spokesman for the Ministry of National Security said the officers completed six weeks training before they were officially confirmed at the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club on Thursday.

Michael Weeks, the Minister of National Security, told the group: “Your work not only helps to prevent illegal goods from entering our economy but also supports the lawful flow of trade while contributing to the island’s economy.”

The minister added: “Your contribution is invaluable and I am confident that you will uphold the proud tradition of excellence within the Bermuda Customs Department.”

The ministry spokesman explained: “This latest intake of trainee customs officers is a testament to the Government's commitment to ensuring the island’s border security remains effective and robust in the face of evolving international threats.”

Lucinda Pearman, the Collector of Customs, told officers: “Enforcement is not just a job, it is a responsibility that requires unwavering commitment to the rule of law and a deep sense of duty to serve and protect.

“Every decision you make, every action you take, will have an impact on individuals, businesses and the broader society.”

Ms Pearman encouraged the officers to work as a team, lead with integrity, continuously learn and stay resilient.

The newest trainee officers are Milun Dunlop, Vladimir Focke, Renee Harvey, Jayden Fagundo-Brimmer, Delray Rawlins, Alan Ball Jr, Jessica Andrade, Shaddai Williams, Christopher Pacheco, Ashanti Hart, Arian Morris, Kenneth Young, David Simmons, Raichelle Pavy-Johnson, Antione Williams, Derriko Augustus, Siairah Minors, Diamond Dill, Tianny Butterfield and Aleisha Martin.

Ms Andrade and Mr Simmons received the inaugural Collector’s Cup for showing dedication, integrity and achievement during their training.

Mr Williams and Ms Butterfield were given the Arthur Eugene Virgil Award.

This award, presented for the first time, was given in memory of a long-serving customs officer to trainees who demonstrated camaraderie, teamwork and encouragement.
