The National Museum of Bermuda is hosting a community day on Sunday as part of its Free for February promotion.

There will be food vendors, door prizes and activities for all age groups as well as free entrance into the museum throughout the month.

A spokeswoman said: “At the National Museum of Bermuda, we strive to be an essential community education resource and hope that everyone will take advantage of the free fun day planned.

“We look forward to welcoming you to Dockyard this weekend.”

The event will run from 10am to 3pm and the museum will be open for free from 9.30am to 5pm.

Lisa Wingood, a yoga teacher, will open the day’s activities with a breathing and movement class open to all ages and abilities.

The session will be followed by a dance by the St David’s Indigenous Society at 10.30am.

There will be interactive art activities with Shanna Hollis, an artist, and Jake Commandeur, an arts teacher, as well as doll-making with the St David’s Indigenous Society.

Talks with artists and experts will include Michael Bradshaw, the president of the Bermuda Friendly Societies Association, and Nicola Muirhead, a photojournalist documentarian.

Dr Bradshaw and Ms Muirhead will explore objects from the friendly society collections at the museum.

John Gardner, a local artist, will share his creative process for the museum’s latest exhibition, Stone: From Bermuda to Charleston.

Mr Gardner has teamed up with Lawrence Mills, who will share his knowledge of local masonry and Bermuda vernacular architecture.

Graham Foster, an artist, will conduct a tour and question-and-answer session on his Hall of History mural.

Bermuda Is Love will hold a fireside chat with Peter Brown, a Second World War veteran, and the museum’s curatorial team will be available to provide information on continuing projects.

The spokeswoman added: “Other entertainment includes a lunchtime family-friendly music performance by local musician Rivah, cannon firings and two Dolphin Quest demonstrations. The Warwick Gombeys will close the day’s events with a performance in the Keep Yard at 3pm.

“All-day activities include games in the Keep Yard.”

Butterfield & Vallis will provide free drinks, FourWays will serve free beef and vegetarian chilli in the Commissioner’s House, and Dockyard Brewing will offer free samples of their local craft beers in the Keep Yard. It will also give out free coffee to anyone arriving before 11am.

Other vendors that will be in the Keep Yard include Top Dog, T’s Homestyle and Ashley’s Lemonade.

The event’s main sponsors are RenaissanceRe and Butterfield.

Guests are advised to bring cash and cards for purchases. Door prizes include MarketPlace gift cards, NMB memberships and publications.
