Police, prosecutors give frank online safety talk to students
Police officers and lawyers discussed personal and online safety with pupils at Harrington Sound Primary School.
The Bermuda Police Service said that members of their Vulnerable Persons Unit and the Department of Public Prosecutions talked about social media, “good touch, bad touch” and trusted adults during a safety summit at the school.
Detective Inspector Kenten Trott, the officer in charge of the VPU, explained: “As part of the mandate of the BPS to make Bermuda safer, the VPU will continue initiatives of this kind, as we seek to ensure our most vulnerable and educated are aware.
“This vital information will help people to protect against harm from predators posing as people who care, and equip them with the knowledge of what to do should they find themselves targeted by such individuals.”
Shaunté Simons-Fox, acting DPP senior Crown counsel, said the department was “committed to working alongside our partners, like the VPU, to empower students with the knowledge they need to recognise danger and protect themselves”.
She added: “By fostering these conversations early, we equip children with the confidence to seek help and make safe choices.”
