Girlguiding Bermuda is inviting the community to enjoy its celebrations commemorating World Thinking Day on Sunday.

The event is celebrated annually on February 22 by all Girl Guides and Girl Scouts organisations globally, and events usually take place on the nearest Sunday.

In Bermuda, the guides will march from City Hall to the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity on Church Street starting at 2.45pm.

A service will then take place at the cathedral from 3pm to 4pm before the guides parade to the flagpole on Front Street and perform a salute to Roslyn Simmons, the island commissioner.

At the pole, they will lower the flag that flies annually on World Thinking Day and will march back up to City Hall via Queen Street.

Cathy Bassett, a leader in the organisation, said: “World Thinking Day is a memorable time for girls. It fosters appreciation for diversity and builds friendship.

“Whether they represent Rainbows, Brownies, Girl Guides or Rangers, all focus and reflect on the sisterhood of guiding.”

Girlguiding is Britain’s largest youth organisation dedicated to girls, and Girlguiding Bermuda is a regional member organisation. Girlguiding UK is a member of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. There are more than ten million Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in more than 153 countries.

Girlguiding

Girlguiding offers girls an opportunity to:

• Think for themselves and make decisions

• Undertake teamwork and acquire leadership skills

• Acquire self-awareness, self-respect and self-confidence

• Develop personal values that give their lives meaning and direction

• Do their best according to their abilities

• Seek spiritual development — whatever faith they belong to

• Contribute to society

• Live by a simple code — the Guide Law

The theme for World Thinking Day this year is “Our Story”.

It’s part of a four-year journey that the WAGGGS member organisations will be taking part in until 2028 to mark two milestones — the 100th World Thinking Day in 2026 and the 100th birthday of WAGGGS in 2028.

The chief guide team at Girlguiding UK said in a statement: “We’ll be collectively diving into the past, present and future of the guiding movement, and reflecting on the values and symbolism of what it means to be a Girl Guide or Girl Scout.”

Ms Bassett said Girlguiding Bermuda is looking for new leaders and volunteers. For more information, visit girlguiding.bm
