Church overwhelmed with blanket donations for seniors
A West End church has thanked the public for their outreach after being loaded with more than 140 blankets for seniors.
Beulah Tabernacle, which put out a call last month for blankets to donate to seniors homes, had its initial inventory of 50 blankets almost tripled once it sent out a call for help.
Amanda Jones, who organised the Somerset church’s drive, said that they were happy to see the community come together for those who needed help the most.
She added: “When we put it out there and showed people what the actual need was, that’s when we found that everybody came out from everywhere.
“It got to the point where we had to stop people from bringing blankets because people still wanted to bring blankets even when we had enough.”
Ms Jones said that the church had initially organised a blanket drive during January to donate to seniors homes.
The group received about 50 blankets by the end of the month, but after talks with several homes, the church realised how great the need was.
Ms Jones said: “Some needed 14; others asked for more. I didn’t realise the need was that big.”
She said that the church put out another call for donations and extended the deadline until February 7.
She added that members shared word of the blanket drive over social media, calling for about 50 extra blankets so they could have 100 in total.
The extended drive was well timed, Ms Jones said, because Masters Home Centre on Dundonald Street, Hamilton, had a sale on blankets.
“People went and bought blankets for the church,” she said, “So we actually made over and above what was asked.”
Ms Jones added: “It really impacted us to know that when there’s a need, especially with our seniors, that the community really did come together. We were really overwhelmed.”
Ms Jones said the seniors homes were “touched” and “very thankful” for the donations.
She also thanked everyone who helped to spread the word or donate blankets.
