BUEI to screen Bermudian-directed film
A short film that puts the spotlight on challenges faced by a dark-skinned actress in the film industry will be screened at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute tomorrow night.
Outcasted, a 13-minute film written and directed by Bermudian Kayode George, will make its debut on the island during the finale of the BUEI’s Black Film Experience at 7pm.
Throughout Black History Month, the BUEI had been showcasing films by emerging Black directors, actors and screenwriters.
Ms George will introduce the feature at the event and she will highlight important themes presented in the film.
The film has already garnered attention at several Canadian and American film festivals.
Ms George said: “Last year, I had the whirlwind experience of creating Outcasted for my thesis project at Toronto Metropolitan University, after doubting whether I had the confidence to write and direct my own film.
“However, when I realised that none of the other films in my cohort had Black characters in them, let alone Black female leads, I felt responsible to take on the challenge and do it myself.
“Fortunately, the film earned me the Achievement in Screenwriting Award at our university’s film festival, and it has been selected for various Canadian and international festivals since.”
The film will feature before the 2024 drama Exhibiting Forgiveness, which follows a Black artist whose path to success is derailed by an unexpected visit from his estranged father, a recovering addict desperate to reconcile.
Father and son struggle and learn that forgetting might be a greater challenge than forgiving.
