Bermuda’s female Cabinet ministers came together this week to share words of empowerment in advance of International Women’s Day tomorrow.

Alexa Lightbourne, the Minister of Home Affairs, said that cost-of-living challenges facing families across the island disproportionately affected women.

“As we celebrate the accomplishments of women, we must also address the systemic barriers that hinder their progress,” she said.

Ms Lightbourne said this year’s IWD theme, “Accelerate Action”, was a call to move beyond rhetoric and bring about real change.

“I am dedicated to tackling the economic disparities that are impacting our community because of rising utility costs and everyday expenses especially felt by working women and single mothers, women who form the backbone of our communities,” she added.

“Economic justice is gender justice. When we make Bermuda more affordable, champion consumer rights, and open doors to equitable opportunities, we empower women to thrive, not just survive.”

Kim Wilson, the Minister of Health, noted the critical role that women play in healthcare in the island, calling on the community to celebrate the achievements and resilience of those who have paved the way.

She said: “IWD serves as a call to action for all of us to redouble our efforts, champion gender equality, and ensure that progress is not just made but sustained.

“Together, we can build a future that is fair, inclusive and empowering for all.”

Tinée Furbert, the Minister of Youth, Social Development and Seniors, added: “We see every woman juggling work, family, caregiving, domestic work, finances, fighting for her dreams, supporting her community.

“This isn’t just a job for me — a commitment to create pathways, to break down barriers, to ensure every woman and girl knows her worth.

“We’re not asking for permission any more. We're claiming our space, our voice, our future.”

OBA commitment to women

Jarion Richardson, the leader of the One Bermuda Alliance, recognised and honoured “the remarkable women” in his party.

He said: “They work tirelessly on the front lines of Bermuda's political landscape and behind the scenes, and assist in creating a more hopeful and inclusive future for themselves and the generations of women behind them.

“Their dedication and contributions continue to shape our party and our country, inspiring the next generation to push forward with purpose and determination.”

Mr Richardson added: “We join the global community in celebrating International Women’s Day 2025.

“This year’s theme, ‘Accelerating Action’, reminds us of the need to continually break barriers, champion equality and drive meaningful change for women in Bermuda and beyond.

“As we acknowledge this important day, the OBA reaffirms its commitment to advancing policies that empower women, promote equal opportunities and accelerate progress towards true gender equality.

“Together, we will continue to take action, drive change and build a Bermuda where all women can thrive.”

Kim Wilkerson, the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, said women have worked hard to break barriers and reshape industries.

“From the courtroom to the boardroom, women continue to redefine leadership, proving that excellence knows no gender,” she said.

“As Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, I am reminded daily that justice is not only about laws but about fairness, inclusion and the courage to challenge the status quo.

“The work of achieving equity is ongoing, and it demands that we amplify diverse voices, dismantle systemic barriers and mentor the next generation of women leaders.”

Crystal Caesar, the Minister of Education, said that IWD was a time to celebrate women across all sectors.

She added that women educators, school leaders and community members had an active role in preparing the new school system.

“In education, we recognise the vital role that women play as leaders, mentors and change-makers, shaping the minds of tomorrow,” Ms Caesar said.

The Public Service will host its Women’s Wellness Celebration Fair today between 11am and 3pm at Pier Six as part of IWD festivities, offering health information in support of women’s physical, nutritional, financial and mental wellbeing.
