City Hall works remedy effects of a long-buried landmark
They may not have equalled the iconic water displays of the Bacardi Building, but the reflecting pool and fountains at City Hall were a much enjoyed feature by Nellie’s Walk along Church Street for decades.
Built in 1960, the water feature went underground in 2012 after proving a drain on the City’s finances because of persistent leaks.
Over the years the pool teemed with fish and lilies, but later in life it was heavily chlorinated.
The decision to fill in the pool in 2012 drew an outcry from readers of The Royal Gazette as well as former mayors.
There was even talk of bringing the City Hall pool back.
Ultimately the structure was dismantled, since topping it up was more than City Hall could afford.
Drainage holes were punched into the deep end of the pool, with gravel and soil poured in.
Basins for the old fountains were dismantled and put in storage.
The reflecting pool has still found a way to make its presence felt, however.
Parts of the lawn’s surface were left uneven — prompting City officials to do some more filling in this week.
The job is expected to be finished by early next month.
