Bermuda’s national youth jump rope team was beaming with confidence after competing against top contenders in the United States over the weekend.

The Bermy Bouncers trained tirelessly for the Ohio Open, a two-day competition that gave the team ample opportunity to fine-tune its efforts towards the upcoming World Jump Rope Championships from July 27 to August 3 in Kawasaki, Japan.

Amirh Wade, spokeswoman and team administrator, said most of the team’s events featured on Saturday.

They included the single rope speed sprint, speed endurance, individual and pair freestyle among other routines.

The contingent included Antoine Martin, Alana Cassidy, Averie Cassidy, Catalina Rovoredo, Nyla Wellman, Summer Redmond, Lily Amaral, Anae Brangman, T’Mia Williams, Phoenix Williams and D’Angelo Williams.

Ms Wade, Caterina Russo, Jennifer Cassidy and head coach Sionna Barton competed in the adult category.

The team was managed by Adria Russo Hollis and their ages ranged between 5 and 16 for the youth jumpers and 19 to 40 for the adult jumpers.

The team members walked away with first, second and third-place ribbons on both days.

Ms Wade told The Royal Gazette: “The performances went really well.

“Our team pushed through very well with little to no misses in their routines.

“They held up against the other 12 teams that were competing.”

She said that eight members would move on to represent the island in Japan this summer.

The team competed in North Carolina last year and Ms Wade said the competitions assisted the team in adjusting its routine to compete on the world stage.

She added: “We are really proud of our team. The Americans, their livelihood is jump rope — it is one of the biggest sports out here.

“We are the only team from the region, so we are really focused and have high standards on performances and bringing personality into routine.

“Standing out is what we got complimented on a lot in Ohio and showing our children’s personality. They said our team was very well behaved.”
