Damage forces Union Street bathrooms to close

Extensive vandalism and safety concerns forced the closure of public restrooms on Union Street, the City of Hamilton said today.

The facilities have been shut since February 26, it was noted.

The City explained: “Leading up to their closure, city crews observed severe misuse, including drug paraphernalia, broken urinals, leaking faucets and repeatedly damaged toilets, many of which had just been repaired weeks earlier.

“Despite efforts by a professional cleaning company, which worked diligently to maintain cleanliness under difficult conditions, the City made the decision to close the bathrooms when the situation became untenable and significant safety concerns were raised.”

The City added that it is reviewing options for repairing and reopening the bathrooms, and advised people to use the facilities on Front Street and Victoria Street in the interim.

It said the latter bathrooms “sustained significant damage due to misuse, including broken doors, locks, vanities, fixtures, lights and mirrors, as well as the repeated theft of paper towels and toilet paper”.

The City urged people to respect city public bathrooms and report misuse or vandalism to the police.

A spokeswoman added: “We understand the importance of public restrooms, but they require proper care and co-operation from the community.

“We are asking the public to help us maintain these spaces so they remain accessible for everyone who needs them.”

The City said it appreciated the public’s support and will provide updates on repairs and reopening decisions.
