Tours, performances and more to celebrate Women’s History
Stories of Bermuda’s trendsetting women will be told later this month as part of a celebration of Women’s History Month in St George’s.
The Women’s History Centre announced that on March 29, it would host the HERstory Festival on Water Street, recognising the contribution of women to the island’s history, culture and economy.
A spokeswoman for the charity said that the event, curated by Kristin White of Long Story Short, will bring together community members, artists, historians and entrepreneurs to create a “dynamic and engaging experience”.
Juanae Crockwell, the executive director of the WRC, said: “As WRC continues its shift to a broader focus on prevention and community-building, events like these are fundamental.
“Celebrating our collective contributions and heritage, while highlighting the incredible work of women in Bermuda, is a crucial part of fostering self-esteem and empowerment among women and girls.”
Ms White said that she was honoured to be part of the event and bring the contributions of Bermuda’s women to life in St George’s.
“As a storyteller, based in the Town of St George, I am inspired by the stories of women from history and those of my fellow female entrepreneurs,” she said.
“Being able to create an experience that highlights these, invites the community and visitors to Bermuda’s beautiful Unesco World Heritage Site and celebrates local artists and creatives is very exciting and hopefully this can become an annual staple of Women’s History Month.”
The HERstory Festival will start at noon and continue until 4pm with a line-up of historical tours, hands-on cultural activities and interactive storytelling throughout the town.
The event will culminate in live performances from 4pm to 6pm, showcasing the artistic talents of Bermudian women through music, poetry and theatrical presentations.
A full schedule of events will be available on the WRC website and social media on Monday.
As part of the event, museums in St George will be open to guests for free, while restaurants in the town will offer special menu items for festival goers.
The Corporation of St George will close Water Street to traffic for the event, while parking will be available at Tiger Bay.
The spokeswoman added: “The HERstory Festival is designed to be a family-friendly event open to all members of the community, not just women and girls.
“Whether you’re an avid history enthusiast, a lover of the arts or simply looking for a meaningful and engaging way to celebrate Women’s History Month, there will be something for everyone at this unique and immersive event.”
