An entrepreneur and community advocate is to give a presentation on how donating time to help society can increase work opportunities.

Zayne Sinclair, who spent four years helping clients to create “edible landscapes” where they grow their own food, will share his expertise at the interactive lunch and learn titled “Leveraging Service to Jumpstart Your Career”.

It takes place on Thursday at the Bermuda College from 1pm to 2pm.

The event will be hosted by the Bermuda Environmental Sustainability Taskforce and will include a question-and-answer session.

BEST said that Mr Sinclair is dedicated to sustainability and social impact, and that he has developed a new business focused on sustainability, community and economic empowerment.

Mr Sinclair said: “We’ll explore how to strategically leverage volunteer work to gain hands-on experience, develop leadership skills and position yourself for future success in rapidly changing times.”

Amy Harvey, an Earth and Environmental Science senior lecturer at the Bermuda College, described Mr Sinclair as “a young and passionate outside-of-the-box thinker”.

She added: “As part of my environmental science courses at Bermuda College, students must engage in community participation throughout the semester as part of their grade.

“This has several goals: one, to build both environmental and social stewardship, secondly, to learn about new things, and lastly, to engage with community partners that they may not have met before and build new relationships.

“I have found that students have been given many opportunities over the years from these interactions ranging from internships to jobs that can lead to career changes.

“This talk should be inspiring for all ages as Zayne also embraces intergenerational learning.”

Jennifer Flood, BEST’s executive officer, highlighted that in Bermuda, charities and other organisations rely heavily on volunteers whose work can contribute to social, economic and environmental sustainability.

She said: “Should these organisations close shop, the cost to society and the Government would be enormous but volunteering is not necessarily a one-way street.

“When you volunteer, you make a connection with the community. Through your actions and involvement you are benefiting others as well as yourself.”

The event will take place in Room H100, The Athene Lecture Hall, at the Bermuda College. It will also be streamed live on the college’s Facebookand YouTube pages
