Second police officer sacked inside a week for gross misconduct

A female police constable has been dismissed after a disciplinary panel found her actions amounted to gross misconduct.

The Bermuda Police Service said the officer was given legitimate access to the funds of a vulnerable person and was found to have misused some of them for personal gain.

The BPS said the issue was unconnected to her role as an officer.

Darrin Simons, the Commissioner of Police, said the decision to dismiss the officer was not taken lightly.

However, he said, such decisions “reinforce a fundamental truth: honesty and integrity are non-negotiable in policing”.

He added: “I have taken the decision, moving forward, to provide some context when notifying of dismissals. This is to provide clarity and minimise unnecessary speculation.

“By being transparent about disciplinary matters that result in dismissal, we set the stage for higher levels of internal and community trust.”

The disciplinary panel determined that the officer’s actions breached its standards of professional behaviour and were incompatible with continued service in the BPS.

The officer’s discharge comes one week after a male constable was dismissed by the BPS for gross misconduct.

Last July, seven officers were suspended while under investigation for allegations of gross misconduct and criminality.

Antoine Daniels, the Assistant Commissioner of Police, said at the time that four officers faced criminal allegations and three others faced allegations of gross misconduct.

Mr Daniels would not share details of the continuing investigations, adding that information would be disclosed only if an officer was charged, convicted and/or dismissed.

Nicholas Pedro, a former senior detective, was sacked after a 30-year career because of his involvement in a criminal investigation into a leaked document detailing the marriage breakdown of former police commissioner Stephen Corbishley.
