Sunrise to come with partial eclipse

Early risers should be treated to a partial solar eclipse as the Sun rises shortly after 7am tomorrow.

The eclipse, which should peak by about 7.45am, will occur as the Moon blocks out a modest portion of the solar disc.

It comes after residents watched an eclipse of the full moon two weeks ago, when the Earth overshadowed our nearest celestial neighbour.

Astronomers have cautioned anyone hoping to watch not to look directly at the Sun.

The warning from Nasa remains the same as the island’s last partial solar eclipse in April last year: when watching a partial or annular solar eclipse directly with your eyes, you must look through safe solar viewing glasses, or a safe handheld solar viewer.

It added: “Eclipse glasses are not regular sunglasses; regular sunglasses, no matter how dark, are not safe for viewing the Sun. Safe solar viewers are thousands of times darker.”

The Bermuda Weather Service has predicted clear skies for the weekend as high pressure remains in effect.
