Plans to move a remote-control car track to make way for a Google transatlantic cable station have been put forward.

The Bermuda Nitro Racing Association leases a portion of land on Burrows Hill in Southside but a planning application submitted by the Bermuda Land Management Company has proposed moving the RC car course to 145 Cooper’s Island Road near Clearwater Beach.

In addition to a dirt track for the RC cars, the site would feature a drivers’ stand constructed out of shipping containers.

A letter from the BLMC, which was included in the application, said: “As the Government of Bermuda provided Google LLC, trading in Bermuda as Sea Grass Services Limited, a long-term lease on the existing land occupied by the Bermuda Nitro RC car club, we were tasked with finding an alternative location for the RC car track, as one of the terms and condition of the Sea Grass lease is that they are responsible for the relocation of the track.”

In September 2023, Google announced a commitment to invest in Bermuda by installing Nuvem — a new transatlantic subsea cable system to connect Portugal, Bermuda and the United States.

Last year, it was announced that the tech giant would pay $4,867,500 for the 262-year lease of a 5.9 acre site at Burrows Hill, Southside to create a transatlantic cable station.

Lieutenant-Colonel David Burch, then the Minister of Public Works, told the House of Assembly that as part of the project Google would pay to relocate the remote control car track based at the site.

He added: “A planning application will soon be submitted for a new RC car track and all works will be funded entirely by Google.”
