Students’ sweet side backs good causes
A group of school pupils spent part of their spring break baking cakes and raised $1,000 in support of two charities.
Adia Simmons, a Year 3 student at the Bermuda High School for Girls, joined friends to raise funds for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Foster Parents Association.
Her mother, Glenisha Simmons, explained: “They chose SPCA because they were learning about habitats in school and they feel like the SPCA does a good job providing a good habitat for pets.
“They also wanted to support children who don’t have the same things that they do.”
The students initially wanted to run a café but settled on a bake sale.
Adia and her friends, Alyssa Li, Annabel Elgersma, Lily Thompson, George Ball and Adeline Lee and some of their siblings, ran the Sweets for Treats stall at the bottom of Jennings Road in Smith’s last Saturday.
Ms Simmons expected them to raise about $300 so was pleased at how much the girls raised.
She explained: “They designed a sign for the sale, set prices for all the items, made sure they had enough goods and packaged everything on their own. They ran the stall and gave correct change, had meetings beforehand about how the sale was going to go, they only needed [the parents] to transport them.”
BHS recognised the girls during a special assembly on Monday.
The charities, which Ms Simmons said were not aware of the fundraiser, will receive their donations next week.
