A couple who moved from Bermuda to northern Italy have written a relocation guide to make an international move smoother.

Sara Schroter and Paolo Odoli will release the Operation Relocation Workbook on Wednesday to guide people through the complex process of leaving the island.

The couple will also return to the island to host an event at the end of June celebrating their book launch and sharing information on their experiences.

Ms Schroter said: “We want this book to be aspirational and offer positive reinforcement.

“It’s not about thinking what can go wrong, but instead what can go right.”

Operation Relocation Workbook offers a road map to help readers select the proper place to move and how to carry out the relocation.

It offers checklists and step-by-step guides to help users get a good lay of the land and feel more confident in their plans.

Ms Schroter said that she noticed many people struggled with the logistics and the fear of the unknown when it came to moving — to the point that some would put off doing so.

She added that even when they did move, people often struggled with “adjustment depression”, leading to feelings of isolation, sadness and anxiety.

Ms Schroter admitted that she and her husband spent a year deciding on where to move, and another year preparing for it.

She added that when the pair moved to Italy last summer, they found many people who struggled with the same problems.

“Our move was about more than just changing locations,” Ms Schroter said.

“It was about embracing new opportunities while honouring the connections we left behind.

“We quickly realised how overwhelming it can be to compare locations, understand visa requirements and manage all the logistics.

“We wished we had a resource to organise every in one place — and that’s why we created Operation Relocation.”

Mr Odoli added: “Coming from Bermuda, it’s a tight-knit community here. I think there’s confidence in knowing that you can just go down the street and run into someone you know, so I can see why a lot of people hesitate.

“I think the thing is having the confidence in yourself to know that you can make that move, while also having the humility to know that you don’t know everything and are willing to learn.”

The Operation Relocation Workbook was designed for expatriates and digital nomads who hoped to transplant their careers.

It also caters to students hoping to start a new life, or retirees hoping to spend their golden years abroad.

The couple said that the relocation guidebook could also help the Government and local organisations attract prospective residents to the island and prepare them for the move.

• Operation Relocation Workbook will be available in paperback on Amazon
