Skyport warns kite-flyers to fly low
Skyport reminded residents to fly kites safely around LF Wade International Airport.
A statement said kites near the terminal — particularly around Ferry Reach, Clearwater Beach and Kindley Field Road — should not be flown higher than 30 metres or 100 feet above ground.
Jason Inniss, Skyport’s director of operations, explained: “The kite height limits near the airport are in place to prevent kites from interfering with aircraft, especially during take-off and landing.
“A single high-flying kite can pose a significant risk to flight safety, including the potential to be ingested into an aircraft engine.”
The Air Navigation (Overseas Territories) Order 2013 prohibits kites from being flown higher than 60 metres — about 197 feet — above ground without permission from the Governor.
