Tributes paid to ‘pillar of support’ Miranda Lister
Condolences were paid today to “the matriarch of a family that has given so much to the service of Bermuda”.
Miranda Lister, the wife of Speaker of the House of Assembly Dennis Lister, passed away yesterday.
The Progressive Labour Party paid tribute to the mother of Dennis Lister III — a PLP MP — Russell, and Randall Lister.
It said: “Mrs Lister was a woman of grace, strength and quiet dignity who stood as a pillar of support for her husband, family and our party throughout decades of service to the people of Bermuda.
“Her warmth and steady presence were known and felt by many within the PLP and beyond.”
Dawn Simmons, the PLP chairwoman, added: “On behalf of the executive and membership of the Progressive Labour Party, I offer heartfelt condolences to the Lister family.
“Miranda’s devotion to her family and her quiet strength behind the scenes reflected the very best of Bermudian womanhood.
“I have personal memories of working with Miranda going back to when we were the Sandys branch, where she was an ardent and reliable source of support.
“She will be sorely missed.”
David Burt, the Premier and PLP leader, said: “Miranda Lister was not only the loving wife of one of our party’s longest-serving MPs, but also the matriarch of a family that has given so much to the service of Bermuda.
“Her loss is deeply felt across our party and our country.
“Our thoughts, our prayers and our love are with the Lister family during this incredibly difficult time.”
Jarion Richardson, the Leader of the Opposition, released a statement on behalf of the One Bermuda Alliance, its constituents and earlier Opposition leaders, offering condolences to the Speaker other family members on the passing of “their beloved Miranda”.
He said: “The character, dignity and conduct of our parliamentary colleagues in the Lister family demonstrates the strength of the foundation Miranda provided.
“For those of us fortunate to study under Miranda, we will never forget her high standards and commitment to excellence as an educator.
“Failure was not an option.
“We extend deep condolences to the Lister and Showers families during this moment of loss, as we admire her lasting legacy personified in our parliamentary and political colleagues.”
