Young Rotarians pitch in to help children’s charity
Promoting “service above self” is the Rotarian motto exemplified by the charity’s club for young people, which rallied to raise funds for the Coalition for the Protection of Children.
Hamilton Rotary’s Interact Club, which also aims to develop leadership skills among its teenage members, easily found a worthy cause.
Aaron DaSilva, the club president for 2024-25, told The Royal Gazette: “We have a history with the coalition — we have done media work for them and raised awareness on issues like being safe online.”
The group, which has assisted the charity since 2023, gives to two charities every year, with the CPC a beneficiary for two years in a row.
“At the beginning of the academic year, we pick focus charities,” Mr DaSilva said. “This year we decided to keep our focus locally in Bermuda.”
This year’s Interact cohort consists of 20 people aged 12 to 18, with the group joining forces for a bake sale and car wash that raised $650 for the CPC.
Kelly Hunt, the executive director of the coalition, was on hand to receive their cheque.
“The Coalition for the Protection of Children is not only appreciative but also inspired by these outstanding young people who prioritise giving back to our community,” Ms Hunt said.
“It has been a true pleasure working with the Hamilton Rotary Interact Club, who have consistently volunteered and contributed to our events and initiatives at the coalition.”
Beverly Daniels, Hamilton Rotary’s youth director, added: “These kids all bought baked goods and worked in shifts washing cars, even though a number of them have Saturday jobs — they really did service above self.”
