David Maycock strikes perfection with 300 using spare ball
David Maycock joked he would roll a perfect game during the final round of the Somersby Men’s Classic League at Warwick Lanes.
Much to his astonishment, that is precisely what happened as the Team Metro bowler reeled off 12 successive strikes on the way to 300.
“My dad was watching us bowl and I told him I am going to shoot 300 this game, not thinking that it would actually happen,” Maycock said. “I just said I am going to shoot 300 this game and it actually did happen.
“That’s my nineteenth 300, so it meant a lot to me. I haven’t had 300 in a little while plus Covid shut us down, so I was extremely happy that I did. The place went wild.”
Maycock experienced problems with his ball in the final frame of the second game. It might have been a blessing in disguise.
“The last frame of the second game, I actually switched to a different ball,” he added. “The other ball wasn’t going through the pins right, so I tried another I had in my locker to see how it reacts.
“I had nothing to lose, as it was the last game of the season. So I went to the locker got the ball, came out, threw it in the last shot of the second game and got a strike.
“I stuck with that ball for the last game and I didn’t miss at all. Everything was just flush; all flush strikes in the pocket.”
With the pressure on, Maycock kept his composure as he approached the feat.
“I got up to the tenth frame and got the first strike,” he said. “I have been there before so I just took a couple of breaths, didn’t look at the crowd because everybody stopped.
“I got the second strike and just put in my head one more and said I’d make my celebration at the end. I said if I get this last one, I am going to go wild.
“I then got the last one; threw it spot-on and all of my emotions just came out. I ran down the lane and just had all my emotions come out, as it’s been a long time waiting.
“Everything has been shut down because of Covid. Just getting back into the swing of bowling and just extremely happy that I could perform and actually come out getting the 300.
“It’s kind of unreal that my dad was actually watching us bowl. He was emotional, too, so it was a great feeling all around.”
