Junior and adult volleyball teams impress overseas
Bermuda’s indoor and outdoor volleyball teams performed admirably in overseas competition this past weekend.
The beach volleyball pairing of Ryan Davies and Brandon Sousa just missed out on the podium when finishing fourth in the Eastern Caribbean Championships in St Lucia.
Competing in Pool C on the opening day of the three-day event, Sousa and Davies finished with a 1-1 record after beating St Lucia’s second team 21-16, 21-8 but losing to St Kitts & Nevis 21-13, 21-13.
After finishing second in the group, Bermuda entered the knockout phase of the competition on day two, where they produced probably their strongest performance of the tournament to knock out St Vincent and the Grenadines in straight sets to progress to the semi-finals.
There they faced St Lucia’s first team of Sheldon Descartes and Joseph Clermont, who were ultimately too strong for the Bermuda pair, winning 21-12 and 21-14. St Lucia would beat St Kitts & Nevis in the final.
Sousa and Davies then played Antigua and Barbuda in the bronze medal match and they put up a valiant fight before going down 21-19, 21-13.
Bermuda’s young indoor volleyball teams were also in action in Boston at the Nike Festival, with the girls under-14 team finishing ninth of the 66 teams after a string of fine performances.
Unbeaten in the opening two days of play without dropping a set and progressing to the Gold Bracket, the team who competed under the name Paradise Hitters were disappointed to be knocked out in a tight game by Xtreme Volleyball Academy when losing 15-12 in the deciding set, but they can be proud of their achievements.
The boys under-16 team, competing under the banner of Big Wave Riders, also enjoyed a good tournament.
Posting a winning record of 4-2 in their six pool matches, they also progressed to the Gold Bracket, where they were beaten by Smash Boys Volleyball Club in a game of fine margins, with the Bermuda team losing 20-25 and 25-27.
That was ultimately good enough to finish ninth of the 54 teams in their division.
The boys under-14 team recovered from a disappointing opening pool, in which they lost all four matches, to win all three of their pool two matches and enter the knockout stages in the Silver Bracket.
They were beaten in straight sets by Long Island Volleyball Club with their performances worthy of a 7th-placed finish among the 13 teams.
The under-12 girls team won three of their matches in Boston to finish 17th of the 24 teams in their age group, while the under-13 girls also came out on top in three fixtures and finished 25th of the 34 teams.
The final team in action over the past weekend were the under-16 girls team who tasted victory in one match and finished 59th of the 71 teams
