Sandys Boat Club on brink of successful title defence

Champions Sandys Boat Club enhanced their chances of retaining their Bermuda Snooker Association league title with a 4-1 demolition at home to fellow contenders Spanish Point Boat Club II on Wednesday.

The result enabled the hosts to draw level with their rivals at the top of the table and in a strong position with a game in hand against Warwick Workmen’s Club II going into the final fixture of the season.

Sandys Boat Club require only a point to clinch the title while fellow contenders Spanish Point Boat Club II have already completed their fixtures.

Paul Fedden got the ball rolling for the hosts with a 64-34 win over Billy Wotton in the first frame.

Peter Bromby then doubled the home team’s advantage after dispatching Tyler Moniz 85-22 in the first of two frames.

The former Olympic sailor also prevailed in the second, which he won 62-40 to seal the deal. Captain Martin Siese made it 4-0 after dispatching counterpart John Orr 51-30.

Wotton and Orr finally pulled one back for the visitors, taking the doubles match 56-28 to deny their hosts the whitewash.

Elsewhere, hosts Warwick Workmen’s Club II beat Royal Artillery Association 4-1.

Karting racer Scott Barnes opened the scoring for Warwick, taking the first frame against Kyle Williams 61-21.

Steven Bremar, the Warwick captain, cushioned the hosts advantage after getting past Jacal Washington 67-41 in the first of two frames between the two.

Bremar then took the second frame 48-37 to clinch the match and complete the sweep.

Government backbencher Zane DeSilva rubbed more salt in the visitors wound after dispatching Fred Richardson 53-30 in the remaining singles contest.

However, the hosts were denied the whitewash after Richardson won the doubles match against Barnes and DeSilva 51-43.

Hosts Watford Sports Club also encountered little resistance in a 4-1 win over Warwick Workmen’s Club I.

Watford jumped out to a 2-0 lead after Keino Zuill won his two frames with Richard Burton by default after the latter was unable to play due to miscommunication.

Trevor Mouchette then defeated Pamela Quadroy 52-22 to extend the hosts lead before Gary Bascombe toppled Watford captain Aaron Bean 47-35 in the remaining singles match to pull one back for the visitors.

Bean and Mouchette then beat Quadroy and Bascombe 59-11 in the doubles match to restore Watford’s three-point advantage.

Meanwhile, Bromby extended his run in the Bermuda Open Singles Tournament to keep his title hopes alive.

Bromby recorded a convincing 2-0 win against Bascombe in the second round playing on his home table at Sandys Boat Club.

He virtually had things all his own way having taken the first frame 62-21 and second 85- 26.

Bromby will now meet clubmate Fedden in the quarter final also to be held at Sandys Boat Club on a date yet to be announced.

Fedden kept his title hopes alive courtesy of an equally convincing 2-0 win over Quadroy at Sandys Boat Club. He won the first frame 45-26 to seize early control and the second by a wider 51-13 margin to seal his place in the last eight.

Also advancing were Todd Dziak, Nadanja Bailey and Bremar.

Dziak came from behind to edge Winslow Smith 2-1 in close affair at Warwick Workmen’s Club.

Smith took the opening frame 77-33 and Dziak the second 57-43 to set up a third and deciding frame.

Dziak dominated the third frame which he won convincingly 63-10 to advance to the quarter-finals against an opponent yet to be determined.

Bremar was also pressed hard before ultimately prevailing 2-1 over Richardson at the same venue. Bremar took the first frame 69-24 to place himself in the driver’s seat but Richardson refused to go down without a fight and came storming back by taking the second 60-42 to level the match.

With a spot in the last eight hanging in the balance, Bremar was equal to the task as he took the third frame 60-22 to advance and secure a date with an opponent yet to be determined.

Bailey also had to dig deep in a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Williams also played at Warwick Workmen’s Club.

The comedian was forced to play catch up after Williams took the first frame 50-40.

With elimination staring him in the face, Bailey bounced back brilliantly by taking the second 49-26 and third 53-44 to seal the deal and clinch his spot in the last eight against the winner between Bean and Moniz at a date yet to be confirmed.

Advancing from the opening round of the Bermuda Open Doubles competition were Fedden and Moniz who defeated Bailey and Dziak 2-0 at Spanish Point Boat Club.

The pair took the first frame 75-20 and the second 53-26 to advance to the quarter-finals where they will face Burton and Bascombe at a date to be announced.

Moniz and Bremar also kept their Tony DeSilva Memorial Cup title hopes alive after coming away victorious against Burton and Alan Smith.

Moniz edged Burton 2-1 at Warwick Workmen’s Club.

Burton took the first frame 82-31 and Moniz the second 57-42 to send the match to a third frame where the latter prevailed 72-35 to set up a quarter- final meeting with Chris Dakin at Spanish Point Boat Club on a date yet to be confirmed.

Bremar encountered less resistance in a 2-0 win over Smith at Spanish Point Boat Club, taking the first frame 42-37 and second 76-64. He will now face the winner between Moniz and Dakin in the semi-finals at a venue and date yet to be announced.
