Warwick Workmen’s Club II claim inaugural Mike Zimmerman Team Challenge title
Warwick Workmen’s Club II capitalised on home advantage to be crowned inaugural winners of the Mike Zimmerman Team Challenge.
Led by captain Steven Bremar, the hosts defeated Spanish Point Boat Club II 3-1 in the final to become the first to have their name inscribed on the new trophy.
Bremar beat rival Billy Wotton to get the hosts off to the perfect start before John Orr took down Warwick’s Zane DeSilva in the second frame to level the contest.
However, DeSilva made the perfect response by bouncing back to win the second of two frames with Orr and restore the hosts lead.
Scott Barnes then won the fourth frame against Tyler Moniz to clinch the title named and played in honour of late Warwick player Zimmerman, who died nearly two years ago from Covid 19.
On hand to present the trophy to the inaugural winners was Zimmerman’s wife, Sharon, and daughter, Melissa.
The title is Warwick Workmen’s Club II’s second of the year having also defeated Spanish Point Boat Club II in the Keen Cup final.
Meanwhile, a new Bermuda Open Singles winner will be crowned this year after Bremar edged defending champion Orr 2-1 in an evenly fought quarter-final contest at Warwick Workmen’s Club.
Bremar seized early control after taking the opening frame but Orr refused to go down without a fight and bounced back at the earliest opportunity to win the second and even the match.
With the contest hanging in the balance, Bremar saved the best for last with a dominant display in the third frame to seal the deal and set up a semi-final showdown with former Olympic sailor Peter Bromby.
In other Bermuda Open Singles action, Jacal Washington defeated Chris Dakin 2-0 in a second-round match at Royal Artillery Association.
Washington will now face Todd Dziak in the quarter-final with the winner taking on Aaron Bean in the semi-final.
Elsewhere, the team of Paul Fedden and Moniz defeated rivals Bromby and Martin Siese 2-1 in the Bermuda Open Doubles semi-final at Spanish Point Boat Club.
Fedden and Moniz took the opening frame to place themselves in the driver’s seat but sailing duo Bromby and Siese came storming back to win the second and level the match.
However, Fedden and Moniz would not be denied as they took the third frame to secure their spot in the final against the winner of the remaining semi-final between Bremar and DeSilva.
In Bermuda Snooker Association League action, Warwick Workmen’s Club II thrashed Warwick Workmen’s Club I 5-0 in a lopsided make up match.
