Archers shine in first indoor competition of year
Hood Appoint Archery’s first indoor shoot of the year has been hailed as a resounding success by organisers.
A total of 18 archers ranging in age from seven to 54 competed in seven divisions and three bow classes in the Gold Point Archery competition held at the St George’s Community Centre last Saturday.
Adult athletes shot from a distance of 18 metres and juniors from 9 metres and competed in either the Barebow, Compound or Recurve divisions, where they shot 60 arrows that were scored out of a total of 600.
Some of the participants were making their debut in a national championship while others took the opportunity to use it as a warm-up for upcoming international competition.
“This was our first indoor competition for the year and I’m pleased with the overall results,” said event organiser Trina Roberts.
“We enjoy hosting local events for archers who want the experience of competition without a lot of pressure and who enjoy having fun while learning the sport. Congratulations to the winners.”
Camerin Pickering was crowned Recurve senior men’s champion with a remarkable score of 550 at 18m on a 40cm target, while Jamie Fraser claimed the Barebow senior men’s title with a score of 267 at 18m on a 40cm target.
The Bowman Compound men’s title went to Oliver De Roulet with a score of 481 at 9m on a 80cm target, Braeden Fraser’s score of 319 earned him Barebow Bowman men’s honours while Jordan Peterkin won the Recurve Cub men’s title with a score of 222 at 18m on a 40cm target.
Elektra Smith claimed the Cadet Recurve women’s title with a score of 370 at 18m on a 40cm target and Ashley Weekes the Senior Recurve women’s title with a score of 454 at 18m on a 40cm target.
Scarlet De Roulet secured the Yeoman Compound women’s title with a score of 354 at 9m on a 80cm target and Robin Selley Junior Recurve women’s honours with a remarkable score of 531 at 18m on a 40cm target.
The island’s archers will now make the necessary adjustments as they return to competing outdoors this weekend.
“We are now in outdoor season and the distances will range from 30m upwards to 70m,” Roberts added.
“Moving to the longer distances takes time and training, and our range in St. David’s has coaches available to assist those archers with their aspirations.”
