Western Stars Angels edge Rainbows in women’s division

Western Stars Angels 9 Rainbows 8

Western Stars Angels won a a nail-biting game against Rainbows in the Women’s Softball League last week.

Angels prevailed 9-8, with wheir big inning coming in the bottom of the third where they scored five runs including a three-run triple by Terry Ewart to go ahead 6 – 3.

Rainbows scored three runs, highlighted by Stephanie Arango’s two-run double, in the fifth to tie the score and they scored two additional runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a two-run lead.

Angels’ Nikita Trott and Keisha Eve both drove in a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the score before Rainbows’ offence stuttered in the seventh. It was Ewart who again provided the critical hit as she drove in the speedy Tameisha Manders from second base to score the winning run. Ewart (2 for 4 – 1d, 4rbi) and Trott (2 for 4 – 2d, 2rbi) topped the balanced hitting attack of Angels. Arango (2 for 4 – 1d, 3rbi) was the standout for Rainbows.

Rainbows 12 PHC Zebras 10

Despite losing that match, Rainbows quickly put their early loss last week in their rear-view mirror as they beat PHC Zebras 12 – 10.

A pair of two-run doubles by Danielle Gibbons and Rebecca Schoeler in the first and second innings respectively assisted Rainbows in amassing an 8 – 3 lead.

PHC fought back with five runs off five hits in the top of the third to even the score.

Rainbows’ Natasha Lambert hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning and two more runs in the fifth, including an rbi single by Goretti Clementine who drove in Ashley Borges from third base, took the score to 11 - 10.

An insurance run was added in the sixth inning giving Rainbows some breathing. Gibbons (2 for 3 – 1d, 3rbi) and 2rbis apiece from Schoeler, Clementine and Borges did the bulk of the damage for Rainbows.

PHC Zebras were led by Taznae Fubler, Ria Grenardo and Chanae Burgess each with 2rbi in a losing effort.

The Hit Factory 21 Platano Power 20

In a high-scoring affair in the A Division, The Hit Factory just edged Platano Power, but their victory may have been gifted to them when their opponents , who scored fifteen runs in the first inning and led 18 – 7 after the fifth, made wholesale substitutions at the end of that inning and could only muster two additional runs.

The Hit Factory took full advantage, scoring 12 runs in the sixth and two more in the top of the seventh inning.

Platano showed some life in the bottom of the seventh inning when Yefer Vinicio blasted a two-run shot to pull within one but it turned out to be too little, too late.

Steven Simons (4 for 5 – 2hr, 5rbi), Shaquille Trott and Rakeem DeShields with 3rbi each led the assault for The Hit Factory while Vinicio (5 for 5 – 3hr, 10rbi), Lewis Reynoso and Edison Tavarez with 2rbi apiece were the standouts for Platano Power.

Moongate Brewers 19 Bermuda Bananas 13

Moongate Brewers behind Kyle Steineman (1hr, 5rbi), Gary Adams (1hr, 3rbi) and Mike Sakata (1hr, 3rbi) defeated Bermuda Bananas.

Brewers trailed 11-9 after four innings but they plated four runs in the fifth inning, including a two-run shot by Sakata to lead 13–11. Bananas tied the score in the top of the sixth inning on a Mark James two-run homer, but Brewers responded in the bottom of the inning to score their final six runs spearheaded by Steineman’s grandslam.

Pitcher Danny Cook then set them down in order at the top of the seventh inning to nullify the threat.

King Beaches 15 Paraquet Flyers 13

In B Division action, King Beaches, outlasted Paraquet Flyers 15 – 13 in a match between two former A Division teams.

Going into the top of the seventh inning and trailing13-9, King Beaches rallied to score six runs, including a three-run blast by John Rolph and Paraquet could not reciprocate.

Lead-off batter, Les Dziwenka (4 for 5 – 2d, 1hr, 7rbi) and Rolph (3 for 5 – 2hr, 5rbi) did most of the damage for the victors, while Andrew Simpson (3 for 5 – 1hr, 4rbi) and Leonardo Silvera (4 for 5 – 1d, 3rbi) topped Flyers’ offensive output.

Hakuna Mata Lions 22 Hosers 2

Lions devoured Hosers in a four inning mercy-rule affair.

New team, Hosers, may be questioning their decision to play B Division ball, given the fact that they had four total team hits with Brad Koperdraad (2 for 2 – 1rbi) offering the only resistance.

Lions, in comparison, had twenty-one total team hits and were led by Rohann Simons (4 for 4 – 2d, 2t, 5rbi), Stephen Smith (3 for 3 – 1d, 1hr, 5rbi) and Scott Barnes (3 for 4 – 1d, 1hr, 3rbi).

Killawatt 20 Corporation of Hamilton 17

In the C Division, an explosion of runs by Killawhat in the fifth inning helped them to defeat Corporation of Hamilton.

Killawhat scored five runs in that inning, including a three-run blast by Mike Sinclair, and a further six runs in the top of the sixth inning,helped them to secure the victory.

Corporation of Hamilton scored nine runs in the fifth inning, including a Quinn Simmons solo homer and a two-run single by Rico Smith. However, they could only manage one final run in the seventh.

Sinclair (2 for 4 – 1 hr, 1sf, 4rbi), Troy Hall (4 for 4 – 4rbi), Khimo Harrison (3 for 4 – 2d, 3rbi) and Tawana Lee (3rbi) provided most of the firepower for Killawhat while Quinn Simmons (4 for 5 – 2d, 1hr, 5rbi) and Smith (3 for 4 – 2d, 3rbi) were respectable offensively for Corporation of Hamilton.

Reach Bums 16 Raggamuffins 0

Reach Bums made short work of Raggamuffins, brushing them aside in five innings, with many doing a a double-take as they found it hard to believe Raggamuffins could muster only one hit.

Justin Corday (3 for 3 – 2hr, 6rbi) and Katie Masters (2 for 3 – 1d, 3rbi) topped all batters in this lop-sided affair.

Home None 21 Deloitte 4

In the E Division, Home None made light work of Deloitte as they won via the fifteen-run mercy rule.

Evan Hughes belted a grand-slam in the first inning to make the score 5 - 0, which turned out to be all the runs they would have needed to secure the win.

Home None were led by Hughes (2 for 4 – 2hr, 6rbi) and Jesse Marshall (4 for 5 – 1t, 5rbi). Alje Richardson (2 for 3 – 1hr, 2rbi) was Deloitte’s top batter.
