Bermuda make grand entrance at Special Olympics
Bermuda was among the 170 countries represented during the Opening Ceremony of the Special Olympics World Summer Games held at the Olympiastadion in Berlin, Germany, at the weekend.
The island’s 19-strong team were led by two Gombeys whose traditional garments added more colour to the pomp and pageantry on display at Saturday’s event.
Bermuda’s athletes are competing in athletics, bowling, equestrianism, swimming and tennis in the hope of improving on the eight medals the island won at the previous Games in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, in 2019.
It is the first time that Germany has hosted the Special Olympics, with this year’s event showcasing 7,000 athletes competing in 24 sports.
The Games are being held from June 17 to 25.
