Zoë Mir selected to play in Girls Baseball World Series event in Japan
Bermudian-based Zoë Mir has been selected to play in the first Pony Girls Baseball World Series in Tochigi, Japan, in July.
The 13-year-old is one of 15 girls picked for the American Association Baseball for All Ambassadors Under-15 squad, who will take part in the tournament from July 31 against other teams from around the world.
Mir, who has attended Somersfield Academy since she was 2, started baseball training with YAO Baseball Bermuda in the league’s Tee-Ball division at the age of four. Over the past decade, she has earned All-Star awards in every division and she is the only girl competing in YAO’s Babe Ruth division for 13 to 16-year-olds.
She hopes the opportunity that has been availed to her will serve as inspiration to other up and coming baseball players to keep on playing the sport.
“I am grateful for all the training and support that YAO Baseball Bermuda, its coaches and my team-mates have given me over the last decade to help me develop into the baseball player I am today,’’ she said.
“I hope to inspire younger girls and boys in Bermuda to learn about baseball, and to stick with it – there are so many opportunities around the world for players who are passionate about the game.”
Frank Fischer, president of YAO Baseball Bermuda, described Mir as a diligent player whose dedication continues to take her places.
“We are very proud of Zoë’s accomplishments and are honoured to have been involved in her training over the years,’’ he said.
“She is dedicated, hard-working and proof that perseverance pays off. We look forward to hearing about her experiences overseas.”
On top of her Bermuda-based training, in 2022, Mir joined the Philadelphia-based all-girls programme Philly Girls Baseball and was part of the Under-12 team that secured third place at BFA nationals, the largest girls baseball tournament in the United States, which draws hundreds of girls from around the world each year.
In October last year, Mir was also part of the same team that earned second place at the DMV Series, a major annual girls baseball tournament in Maryland where they only lost the championship game in extra innings after reaching a 3-3 tie at the end of regular innings.
Before her trip to Japan, Mir will once again play in the annual BFA nationals, this year in Elizabethtown, Kentucky.
She will be playing in the Under-14 Division for the Philadelphia Liberty, the sister team of Philly Girls.
