Inspiring up and coming talent: Eva Frazzoni will be the guest speaker at the Denton Hurdle Memorial Awards ceremony to be held at Warwick Academy’s Phoebe Purvis Memorial Hall

Some of Bermuda’s emerging sporting talents will be honoured at the annual Denton Hurdle Memorial Awards tonight.

The awards will be held at Warwick Academy’s Phoebe Purvis Memorial Hall and this year recognises the exceptional performance of 51 primary, middle and senior school athletes.

Each school was asked to nominate a boy and a girl with all submissions then handed over to ten judges in the sporting and/or education field to elect this year’s winners.

“To be nominated for the award, students must display the following qualities: active participation, leadership, sportsmanship, self-discipline, dedication and co-operation,’’ said the organisers in a statement.

“They must demonstrate positive attitudes in school. Nominees should also be good scholar-athletes as well as good role models. Only students in the final year of primary, middle or senior school are eligible for this reward.”

Bermuda women’s football team captain Eva Frazzoni will be the guest speaker at the awards ceremony. She won the middle school girls award in 2012.

Notable past winners include Front Street Mile champion Dage Minors and footballers LeiLanni Nesbeth, Frazzoni, Keunna Dill, Razir Jones, Ahria Simons, and Justin Donawa.

Dame Flora Duffy, Tyler Smith, Cup Match stars Terryn Fray, OJ Pitcher, Oronde Bascome, Greg Maybury and Malachi Jones, tennis player Gavin Manders, college basketball star Erica Woods, and the only three-times winner Taylor Ashley Bean (2004, 2007 and 2011) have also been honoured.

The award was also won by Hurdle’s nephew and former West Indies rugby sevens player Derek Hurdle in 1989 and Derek’s son, Tyler Hurdle, in 2021.

Hurdle was a keen sportsman who attended Warwick Academy, Bermuda College and Dalhousie University. After completing his physical education degree, Denton went on to teach at Warwick Academy. An ardent sportsman who excelled in soccer, cricket and volleyball, Denton’s first love was rugby and he was captain of Teachers Rugby Football Club. He was also a regular member of the Bermuda rugby team before sadly passing away in 1985.
