‘Not bad for a rock in middle of ocean’ – Bermuda’s Muay Thai fighters bring back belts
Tyler Kerr and Rhiannon Morgan were among the winners as part of a Fight City Muay Thai and Fitness contingent that enjoyed success at the annual Thai Expo World Championships in Iowa.
Competing in the Featherweight B Class Division, Kerr overcame Isiah Fernandes of Southside Muay Thai in Ontario, by unanimous decision, with Morgan matching the accomplishment in the Junior Novice Debut Atomweight, beating Aracely Carrillo of Killer Bees Ardmore in Oklahoma.
“We finished off with what I can only describe as undeniably beautiful performances from Tyler and Rhiannon, who will both be bringing belts back to Bermuda,” said Chuck Morgan, head coach and father of Rhiannon.
“My daughter is bringing home Bermuda’s first junior title from the largest Muay Thai tournament in the world.
“What an amazing showing in her first-ever tournament. She was cool, calm, calculated and composed. She listened and did what she had to. She put in the work and deserves every ounce of the win.
“It was Tyler’s sixth title fight and he realised what was happening early and made the adjustments to take home the victory. I’m proud as both a coach and a dad and can’t wait for both of these two to rack up the belts and keep improving.“
The duo were part of a ten-fighter roster who competed at the four-day event, which attracted more than 1,000 amateur competitors.
A host of the club’s other fighters enjoyed medal success, including Gabriel Scott and Savannah Attride-Stirling, who both narrowly missed out on a title when settling for silvers among a highly competitive Novice Debut Division, while Keron Lee finished second overall in the Senior Novice Division.
Paolo Fiandesio capped off the medal haul, taking bronze in the Novice Division.
There was also a number of encouraging performances from Ashton Outerbridge, Aiden Outerbridge (Junior Novice Debut), Ashleigh Mayo (Senior Novice) and Jay Astwood (B Class.)
“This has been an amazing experience with some amazing fights put on by the Fight City Muay Thai and Fitness squad,” added Morgan. “I ask so much of them and they give so much of themselves for a brief fleeting moment in the ring.
“We had five people come into the championship day and ended up with a record of 11-5 [losses and wins overall]. Not bad for a rock in the middle of the ocean.”
