Archers achieve medal haul in Pennsylvania
National Archery Association of Bermuda assistant coach Trina Roberts has hailed the island’s success at the Fall Harvest Star FITA tournament in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
The four-member team of Camerin Pickering, Jaydon Roberts, N’Dera Smith and Robin Selley came away with three medals, including two gold, at the indoor competition held at the Lancaster Archery Academy from October 27 to 29.
“Our Bermuda archers competed in a STAR FITA 18-metre event in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and we are pleased with the results accomplished by each participant,” Roberts told The Royal Gazette.
Pickering continued what has already been a stellar year competing internationally by claiming gold in the Men’s Recurve Senior Division competition with an impressive score of 550.
Also standing on top the podium was Roberts who secured gold in the Men’s Recurve Junior Division event with an equally superb score of 551.
Smith also earned a trip to the podium after taking home the silver medal in the Women’s Recurve Junior Division competition with a score of 342.
Also holding their own was Selley who narrowly missed out on achieving a podium display after finishing fourth in the Women’s Recurve Cadet Division event with a score of 514.
The experience was a particularly memorable one for Smith and Selley who were making their debut at the competition where they lived up to the expectations of assistant coach Roberts.
“For Robin and N’Dera, this was their first time shooting this event and their scores were about where we expected them,” she added.
“Outdoor season just completed October 1 so they had some time to prepare. We had booked a few training sessions in Lancaster to prepare for the event as well.”
Pickering, Roberts, Smith and Selley also represented the island at the The Vegas Shoot at the South Point Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas in February.
Bermuda’s archers have thrived competing on the international scene this year.
Bernard Wade earned silver and bronze medals at the Island Games in Guernsey in July while Pickering earned Bermuda eligibility for a universality spot at next summer’s Olympic Games after achieving the Olympic minimum qualifying score at the Hyundai Archery World Cup Stage 4 in Paris in August.
“We are extremely pleased with the performance of our athletes this year,” assistant coach Roberts said. “Scores and finishing positions continue to climb upwards.”
