Pickleball enthusiasts take chance to coach
Pickleball in Bermuda is set for further growth after 16 enthusiasts embarked on courses to become coaches.
Internationally acclaimed coaches Marina Anderson and Chris Powers, both from the United States, were on the island for a week at the beginning of December to host clinics for intermediate and advanced players that attracted more than 80 participants at WER Joell Tennis Stadium.
Anderson and Powers also conducted a comprehensive two-day coaching certification process, endorsed by the Pickleball Pro Registry, while a special showcase at the Reefs Resort, thanks to the benevolence of owner David Dodwell, allowed local players to engage with Anderson and Powers.
The presence of two mentors brought to fruition efforts by the Pickleball Association of Bermuda to advance coaching excellence and broaden the sport’s reach across the island.
PAB president Matt Dragonetti, vice-president Danny Fox, board members George Thomas and Sue Chiappa and former national volleyball coach Bill Bucci were among those taking part in the course.
Bermuda tennis players Tariq Simons and Gavin Manders also took part, with Manders attaining clinician status.
“His [Manders ] involvement in assisting Marina during the certification process positions him to train and certify Bermudian coaches,’’ The Pickleball Association of Bermuda said in a statement.
“This marks a significant development for destination certifications in Bermuda in 2024 and the creation of a new generation of certified Bermudian pickleball coaches.
“Their collaborative effort and seamless coordination from the PAB team were instrumental in delivering an unparalleled pickleball experience.
“This cohesive team effort not only facilitated the smooth execution of the event, but also reinforced the association’s commitment to growing the sport in Bermuda.”
Manders, who recently retired from international tennis, is impressed by the level of organisation exhibited by those involved in pickleball.
“The success of this multi-tiered event reflects the exceptional teamwork and harmony within the PAB,’’ he said.
“Key contributors like Val Stephenson, Myra Virgil, Sarah Fox, and Kim Simmons, alongside the entire team, played crucial roles in orchestrating this significant pickleball experience.
“Their unified efforts not only ensured the event's smooth operation but also showcased the association's dedication to nurturing pickleball's growth in Bermuda.”
Reflecting on the week spent by the two coaches, Dragonetti described it as a crucial period for sport on the island.
"The week has been a watershed moment for pickleball in Bermuda,’’ Dragonetti said.
“The expertise of Marina and Chris, combined with our team’s dedication, has set a solid foundation for the sport's continued growth on our island.”
Fox also shared his thought on the impac the visiting coaches had on the pickleball community of Bermuda.
“The energy and wisdom Marina and Chris have brought to our community over that one week have been transformative,’’ Fox said.
“Their enthusiasm for pickleball is contagious and has undoubtedly enhanced our local sporting spirit.”
