Antonio Pierce striving to become Raiders head coach on full-time basis
Las Vegas Raiders interim coach Antonio Pierce has outlined his desire to remain in the role on a full-time basis.
The former Giants linebacker, who has Bermudian parentage, was handed the reins for the remainder of the season following the dismissals of Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler at the start of November.
After a positive start to his tenure with back-to-back victories in his first two games against his former side and the New York Jets, the Raiders endured a three-game winless run including a disappointing 3-0 loss at home to the Minnesota Vikings.
However, a 63-21 thrashing of the Los Angeles Chargers was followed up with a shock 20-14 success over the Kansas City Chiefs on Christmas Day – just the Raiders’ second win at Arrowhead Stadium in the last decade – and has reignited the discussions for Pierce to get the job full time.
“I'm going to keep saying it as long as it looks right, sounds right and smells right, I'm fine with it. Win, lose or draw,” Pierce said to USA Today.
“I'm going to be me and the players are going to be them. When this bad boy's over with, hopefully it all works out and we're together for more years to come.”
The latest success sees the Raiders record at 4-3 under Pierce and, at 7-8 this season, leaving them still mathematically in play-off contention.
While the team’s chances of reaching the post-season may be a long shot with two final regular-season games away to the Indianapolis Colts and home to the Denver Broncos, Pierce is well aware they could serve as an extended audition to impress owner Mark Davis and potentially remain in the role.
“My resumé is on the grass. What do you want? I can put up a fancy presentation, I've seen that before. I can put up stats, I can put up my resumé, but the best thing that happened for me was an opportunity," added Pierce, who cannot automatically be hired as head coach due to the NFL’s Rooney Rule, meaning the team would have to interview at least two “external” minority candidates for the job.
“I said this maybe last week, the worst day I was going to be as a head coach was my first day. Each day is my job and I really take pride in growing each and every day to get better.
“No different than when I was a player to get better. By the end, you look at it, whatever your career was and whatever my coaching careers is, and you sit there and say, ‘Look, this is what he was.’
“Hopefully Mark Davis sees improvement and growth within our team. He sees the style and play that he wants from the Raiders. He sees a fanbase that's behind us. He sees a building that loves coming to work and loves being here.
“At the end of the day, right now, my record, our record, is 4-3."
