Lindo’s Tigers retain Fast5 title after agonising wait
Lindo’s Tigers continue their fine start to the netball season by defending their Fast5 tournament title at Bernard Park on Saturday.
Anthony Mouchette’s side finished the one-day event tied with Storm on 12 points at the conclusion of the round-robin fixtures, with the winner decided on goal difference.
Tigers won four of the five matches played, with their only defeat coming against Storm. A loss by Storm to Phoenix Heat meant they finished with the same record as Tigers, with calculators needed to determine the winner and an anxious wait involved for both teams, with the champions only being confirmed the next day.
Jahtuere Trott, the Tigers captain, had a strong feeling at the end of the tournament that her team had done enough to secure victory since she and her sister, Jahkenya, had piled on the points.
“I knew we had it in the bag,” Trott said. “My sister and I are very good at taking and scoring long-distance shots with quick movement and this is the tournament to showcase our skills.
“I actually thought the goal difference would have been closer against Storm as they are a young team with some great potential and a team to look out for.
“Winning our first game and then losing the second game, we knew we had to win the next three games in order to win the tournament, which we did accomplish. We had one loss and so did Storm, so it all came down to goal difference.
“Coming back from the Christmas break after having only two training sessions before this tournament, it felt good to be playing with my team again and picking up right where we left off.”
Mouchette commended his players for a successful title defence.
“It was a total team effort and all players had a role to play and executed well,’’ he said.
“The loss to Storm in the second game was a wake-up call. We had to win our remaining games and needed to rely on Storm losing, which they did to Phoenix.
“I'm proud of the ladies as it was a long day and they committed themselves to the cause. They played for each other and came through.”
