Sandys Secondary Middle School came from behind to overcome Warwick Academy 3-2 after extra time to win the inaugural Bermuda Schools Sports Federation under-12 netball tournament at Bernard Park on Tuesday.

Alexa Correia had given Warwick, the primary school division 1 champions, an early 2-0 lead in the first half, but Sandys clawed their way back to tie it up just before the final whistle, sending the game into extra time. Eliana Trott had two goals for the west enders while Alae Rochester scored the other goal for Ranae Bean’s side.

Sandys also needed extra time to defeat Dellwood Middle School 4-3 in the semi-finals. Trott and Rochester each scored twice in the win, while Olivia Dale scored twice for Dellwood along with a single goal from Saniya Govia.

In the other semi-final, Correia and Annabelle Shah each scored twice to lead Warwick Academy to a 4-2 win over Somersfield Academy. Cali Greenidge and Helena Baillie scored for Somersfield.

Azaria Scott, the Sandys captain, felt the pressure since her team was depending on her experience as the 11-year-old centre plays for Phoenix Heat under-11s.

“It feels really good to win this,’’ Scott said. “I play for Phoenix and I've also won an under-11 tournament with that team as well.

“The tournament was good but it could be stressful, hard sometimes because a lot of people were counting on me. There was pressure on everybody.”

Celeigh Bridgewater of Warwick Academy also found playing in the tournament demanding. Bridgewater, 11, who plays wing defence, is on the books of North Village’s under-14 team.

“It was fun and stressful because there was a lot of pressure,’’ she said. “I'm not really sad we lost in the final, at least we finished second and got silver medals.”

Allison Steynor, another Warwick Academy player, had a great time playing at Bernard Park for the first time.

“It was fun but a bit stressful because I had to put in a lot of work,” she said.
