Lindo’s Tigers came from behind to overcome Storm 40-36 in a tightly contested Bermuda Netball Association Senior League encounter at Bernard Park on Saturday.

It was Tigers’ sixth win of the season and their second in a row after they suffered their first defeat to defending league champions Phoenix Heat.

In an exhilarating encounter, Tigers rallied to win after being behind for the first three quarters, with the Storm camp laying the blame for the defeat at the feet of the officials.

“I believe that the game really started off well, but it’s definitely getting hard for us because it constantly feels that everyone is against us,’’ Storm captain Debre Evans said.

“I'm not taking anything away from Tigers because they are a phenomenal team with amazing players, but there were definitely nine people on their team in this match, not seven.

“It was our seven versus Tigers and the umpires, and that’s what it’s starting to feel like. It’s becoming a pattern down here and it’s just a lot to take in.

“We just try to push through but it is definitely hard. It’s a very competitive league, so feeling that umpires are against you as well makes it even more challenging for us.

“We know an umpire is not going to call everything, but they have to at least be consistent.

“They can’t call one thing for one person and then let someone get away with it. if you’re going to let one get away, you might as well let everyone get away.”

Goal shooter Jahkenya Trott, who was withdrawn at half-time top scored for Tigers with 18 goals. Candace Paynter, the goal shooter in the last two quarters did not disappoint, as she found the target 16 times. Captain and goal attack Jahtuere Trott contributed six goals on her return from a hamstring injury.

Centre Kaylee Lema won the attacker’s accolade for Tigers and the defender’s award went to Demiqua Daniels.

Best attacker Zakiyah Durham led the Storm charge with 18 goals. She was supported by Nabiilah Nasir’s 14 points, with four goals coming from Rihanna Riddicks. Captain Debré Evans picked up the defender’s award as well as the MVP prize for the vanquished side.

Lema, 22, a former Storm player, was delighted to play an influential role in her team’s victory.

“It was a really close game and we executed what we had to execute,’’ Lema said.

“We were down but with the adjustments made we were able to come back. Storm are a great team with good techniques, and they were a good challenge for us to get our goals up.

“This is my first season back as I've been off for two years now. I'm glad to be back with a different team, new structure, and new techniques.

“For us to win the league, we need a positive attitude. We tend to lose our heads quickly, but if we don't get mentally defeated, I think we can win the league.”

Tigers captain Jahtuere Trott was pleased that her side came through the tough test.

“It was a very tight game,’’ Trott said. “I know Storm is a younger team and they’ve got much more energy. They’re more physical as well so they gave us a run for our money.

“I'm happy with the win, I’m proud of my team and we’re keeping our heads and playing really well. We have three more games, Village, Phoenix again and St George’s. We’re looking to winn all three and then claim the league title.

“For us to beat Phoenix it will take a lot of sweat and tears because they’re a very good team. They’re a more experienced team and had the title for a number of years for now.

“It’s going to be a challenge, we've beaten them before in the past so it can be done and any team is beatable. To be the best, you have to beat the best.”

In an earlier match, North Village continued to put pressure on Phoenix and Tigers when they won 60-19 over St George’s.

Darrika Simons, the Village MVP, was again sharp in front of goal as she put the ball into the net 42 times. Coriah Simmons, the goal attack, contributed 18 goals.

Jada Richards, who started in defence before she was later moved to attack, picked up the attacker’s prize. Taahira Butterfield was voted the best defender for the winning side.

The St George’s goals came from Nikita Trott, Kristin Holman, and Sonja Townsend. Trott was adjudged the team’s MVP, Kiarrah Rogers the most outstanding attacker, while the defender’s award went to Townsend.
