Karting, drag racing and motorcycling combine to create epic Bermuda Weekend
Bermuda Karting Club president Jason North is determined to showcase the sport at its finest this weekend.
In conjunction with the Bermuda Motorcyle Racing Association and Bermuda Drag Racing Association, the Lindo’s Double Header Race Weekend at the Southside Motor Sports Park offers spectators the opportunity to watch exhilarating race action from all three disciplines.
For North it is the chance to witness a long-awaited ambition come to fruition after he initially planned to host the event back in 2020.
“For the first time we’re will be racing alongside the other two clubs and so it’s a real chance to show off all three sports,” North said.
“For those who are into motorsport it should be a really cool experience because spectators will get the chance to see some really good racing. It is actually something we worked on and had planned to host in 2020, but unfortunately the Covid-19 pandemic forced us not to.
“This year we decided to bring it back and so it’s been long awaited and is really exciting for us.”
While avid motorsport enthusiasts are sure to be in attendance, the prospect of free entry across the weekend leaves North hopeful of attracting not only new fans but also potential future drivers.
“We’re offering free entry for the event and so hopefully we will get a lot of fans come along over the weekend,” he added.
“We have had a lot of spectators come out for our street races when we’ve hosted them, but then we’ve never seen them again at Southside.
“The idea of this weekend is to showcase not only the sports, but also the facility and get people to come down and check it out.
“Spectators can come and watch from the stands for free, but we are also offering pit passes [$20 per day or $30 for both days] where they can come into the pits to get up close to the drivers and ask questions and really experience it all first-hand.
“It’s a great chance to show off the sports and get new people interested in motorsport. It’s also a good opportunity to try and get some young people interested because they are the future of these sports.
“If you can attract the young people then you also get their families involved and that’s what we are all about, it’s very family orientated.”
North is expecting a thrilling weekend with particular thought given to the competitors in the pursuit of creating an exciting challenge on track.
“It should also be a really cool experience for all of the drivers,” North said.
“For the first time we’ve actually redesigned the track and so it will be a brand new challenge for everyone and give no one an advantage.
“We’ve never done that before and so the practice session will be the first time any of the drivers have experienced the track layout. That should make racing a lot more unpredictable and so that’s really exciting for everyone.
“Not only are there trophies up for grabs across the weekend, but points will also go towards the season championship so that should make it interesting.
“As an added bonus, we also have international driver Mario Gill from Canada competing among the 14 drivers in the Shifter Class.
“It will be really exciting to see him go up against the best of Bermuda and watch them battle it out.
“In total we have 44 karts signed up, which is great. Hopefully we will have some good weather and people come out and enjoy what should be a really exciting weekend.”
