While none of them were able so secure a ticket to Paris Olympics, Bermuda archers impressed at the two tournaments held in Colombia.

Camerin Pickering fell at the quarter-finals stage of the individual recurve in the Continental Qualifier Americas, closely beaten 6-4 by Oscar Ticas of El Salvador

Pickering went on to achieve a national record at the Pan American Championships in Medellin.

The 24-year-old’s score of 646 from a possible 720 during the individual qualifying round in the men’s recurve, saw him surpass his previous national record of 644, achieved at last year’s Archery World Cup in Paris.

He was however, knocked out by Gabriel Anderson of the United States, in the round of 16.

On Thursday, Pickering was part of a Bermuda team that bowed out in the first round at the Pan American Archery Championships after losing to Chile.

Trina Roberts, the Bermuda’s assistant coach and team manager for archery, was pleased with the performance of the island’s archers in Colombia.

“These two competitions are the exposure our men’s recurve team need as we continue to develop Olympic archers,’’ Roberts said.

“Bermuda’s performance has been recognised within the Americas region as a country to be watched out.

“Team Bermuda were seeded 10th going into the recurve men’s team event. Their opponent was Chile who was seeded seventh and a strong competitor.

“Chile took an early lead wining the first two sets. Bermuda then came back and won the third set to later fall 6-2 to Chile.

“This event was an Olympic qualifier for team spots and I knew this would be a close match for the team.

“We are pleased with the effort and Bermuda finished in 10th place. We will have another opportunity in June to qualify for the Olympics in the men’s recurve team event in Antalya, Turkey.”
