Warwick Workmen's Club clinch snooker league
Warwick Workmen's Club II have won the snooker league for the 2023-24 season after securing an unassailable lead following their 3-3 draw with Watford Sports Club I.
Scott Barnes got Warwick off to a flying start when he took out Watford's Mark Iris 47-36 in the first frame.
Watford captain, Aaron Bean equalised when he defeated Warwick team leader, Steven Bremar 51-48 on the black.
Zane DeSilva restored the lead for Warwick in the next, overcoming Mark Iris 67-43. Bremar then increased the lead for Warwick when he dispatched Keino Zuill 58-48.
Zuill, however, fought back in the next encounter when he beat Zane DeSilva 87-10 in the fifth frame.
Bean then took the final frame for Watford to clinch the draw at 3-3, when he beat Scott Barnes 63-15.
The runner-up’s spot in the league is still up for grabs, as only three points separate teams from second up to fourth. All the three sides in contention have one game in hand to play.
Spanish Point Boat Club I drew 3-3 with Warwick I in Spanish Point. Chris Dakin opened the scoring for Point when he took out Pamela Bremar 57-19. Bremar also lost 59-39 to Alex Smith for Point to extend their lead.
Gary Bascombe won 69-48 over Point captain, Stewart Greenslade, to pull one back for Warwick.
Dakin’s 69-58 victory over Winslow Smith in the fourth frame had Point further extending their advantage.
Bascombe kept Warwick in the contest by defeating Smith 66-40, before Winslow Smith clinched the draw for Warwick, when he beat Greenslade 52-31 in the final frame.
Sandys defeated Point II 4-2, in a contest where Martin Siese, the former’s captain started things off with a 46-40 victory over Tyler Moniz.
Point captain, John Orr, levelled at 1-1 when he defeated Paul Fedden 52-19. Richard Beale restored the lead for Sandys, his 54-48 triumph against Richard Burton putting them 2-1 up.
The fourth frame saw Fedden build on that lead, with victory over Moniz. Burton pulled one back for Point when he defeated Siese 56-49 in the fifth frame.
Richie Beale sealed the victory for Sandys, with a 45-44 final frame 45-44 success over Orr.
In the Bermuda Open singles quarter-finals, Steven Bremar triumphed 2-1 over Fedden. Bremar now faces a showdown with Toby Wright, the season newcomer, in the semi-finals.
Bremar combined with Zane DeSilva to win 2-0 over Orr and Matt Garrod in the doubles. Their opponents in the semi-finals are former winners, Fedden and Moniz.
