Jaydon Roberts still on course for Junior Pan Am Games qualification in El Salvador
Jaydon Roberts remains on course of achieving his primary objective at the Pan American Youth and Masters Championships in El Salvador.
After advancing from the qualifying stage in the under-21 men’s recurve category on Wednesday, the 18-year-old archer prevailed 6-4 over Canadian Fazeel Ferouz in a round of 16 elimination match but lost 6-0 against Mexican Osvaldo Ramirez in the quater final, taking aim at 122 centimetre target from a distance of 70 metres.
“Jaydon shot against Canada in the 1/16 elimination match and came from behind to win and advance to the match against Mexico, where he lost,” said coach and father Ross Roberts, who is accompanying his son at the event.
“Overall they were two good matches and we are pleased.”
Despite his fluctuating fortunes, the promising athlete remains on course to secure one of the spots on offer for the Junior Pan American Games in Paraguay next year having made the cut for the elimination round in that event.
Roberts is among the 16 athletes that will compete for the ten available qualifying spots and will face off against Brazilian Leonardo Da Silva Oliveira in his opening elimination match on Friday.
“Bermuda needs to finish in the top ten and Jaydon is shooting good and feels good going into tomorrow’s event,” coach Roberts added.
There are nine countries being represented at the ongoing championships in El Salvador, which concludes on Sunday.
