National volleyball teams perform well in US Open Championships
Bermuda’s national volleyball squads are heading home from Ohio after an enjoyable trip to the US Open Championships.
The men’s and women’s team competed alongside hundreds of talented teams at the three-day tournament, which was held in the Greater Columbus Convention Centre.
Competing under the name DIVC, the women’s team finished 32nd of the 71 teams, winning two of their seven matches.
They started the tournament well on Friday with two victories over Country Roads (25-18, 20-25, 15-13) and Brew City Babes (25-18, 25-22) sandwiching a narrow defeat by Beach Please (27-25, 24-26, 12-15).
Those results were enough for them to be placed in the silver bracket for day two, with the standard increasing and they were unfortunate to lose three matches against Buffa-hoes, Elite Titans and TPE before again tasting defeat in their final match on the last day.
The men’s team finished 48th of the 58 and were unlucky to be placed in the copper bracket after their opening round of matches, in which all three teams in the group finished with a record of one win and one loss.
Competing under the name Ace Boyz, they beat LDE 15-25, 25-22, 15-13 in their opening game before losing 18-25, 19-25 against EZ Clapp. They then went on to win three of their last matches to end the tournament on a high.
The senior squads will next be in action in Antigua in October.
