Yushae DeSilva-Andrade took a huge scalp when beating the world No 1 player in the Povoa de Varzim World Boccia Cup in Portugal.

DeSilva-Andrade bounced back from a disappointing 11-1 defeat to Thailand’s Satanan Phromsiri on Wednesday to beat Singapore’s Yee Ting Jeralyn Tan, the world’s best player, by a score of 4-2.

The Bermudian will now play her final pool match tomorrow against Bat-El Brightman Ha Cohen, from Israel, but will need Tan to lose if she is to progress from her group.

Coach Larry Hunt was pleased at the way DeSilva-Andrade bounced back from defeat.

“She showed a lot of character coming back from an 11-1 loss yesterday to beat the world No 1,” Hunt said.

“It’s a great accomplishment for her and if the world No 1 loses again tomorrow and Yushae wins then she will go through with the girl from Thailand.

“With this win under her belt she is very confident.

Omar Hayward is also in action and was unlucky not to pick up a win, losing 4-2 to Jose de Oliveira from Brazil and 7-4 to world No 3 David Smith before ending the group with an 8-2 defeat to Martin Frkovic.

Despite the losses, Hunt was pleased with Hayward’s performance and felt he deserved to pick up some points.

“Omar played well and deserved to get more than what he did,” Hunt said.

“He was only just beaten by the world No 3 and was well in the game until the end.

“He is a bit down because he deserved to win at least one, if not two, of those matches but he knows he showed a lot of improvement and hopefully he will get there next time.”
