Jah-Nhai Perinchief and Adriana Penruddocke will carry the Bermuda flag during the opening ceremony at the Olympic Games on Friday.

Sailor Penruddocke was the first member of the Bermuda team to qualify for Paris, while triple jumper Perinchief, a former Commonwealth Games bronze medal-winner, was the final athlete to secure his spot this month.

Katura Horton-Perinchief, chef de mission for the Bermuda squad, announced the decision after arriving in Paris yesterday along with rower Dara Alizadeh.

“The opportunity to carry the Bermuda flag into an Olympic stadium is undoubtedly one of the most prestigious honours the Bermuda Olympic Association can bestow upon an athlete,” Horton-Perinchief said.

“Adriana and Jah-Nhai, as brand new additions to the Olympic fraternity, will represent the island with pride, showcasing the beauty and diversity of the breadth of sporting talent Bermuda has to offer the globe. They are two of Bermuda’s best and I’m truly ecstatic for both of them.”

The opening ceremony in Paris on Friday promises to be a spectacular start to the Games and history will be made as it is the first one not to take place in a stadium.

Instead, the parade of athletes will be held on the Seine with boats for each national delegation equipped with cameras to allow television and online viewers to see the athletes up close.

Winding their way from east to west, the 10,500 athletes will cross through the centre of Paris, with the parade coming to an end in front of the Trocadéro, where the remaining elements of Olympic protocol and final shows will take place.
