Bermuda’s bowlers depart for Nevada with big ambitions
Bermuda’s bowlers are about to embark on their Pan American Bowling Championships campaign in Reno, Nevada.
Flying the island’s flag are David Maycock, Lamar Richardson, Dayvon Tucker, Damien Matthews, Michael Honore and Anthony Hayward. They will put their skills to the test competing in men’s singles, doubles, trios and the prestigious five-men team event.
The local contingent will be up against 25 countries from the western hemisphere in each event that will consist of six qualifying games to determine who walks away with the medals. The overall favourites are the US.
Steven Riley, the Bermuda manager, is sure the island’s team will be equal to the task based on his observations during their training in the build-up to the championships, to be held in the prestigious National Bowling Stadium from August 18 to 24.
“The team have been busy training the last few months adjusting to various different lane patterns and sharpening up their games,” he told The Royal Gazette.
“Each member knows the task will be very tough as they aim for success with the hope of bringing home a medal or two.”
There is added incentive for Bermuda’s bowlers as the championships will also serve as the first qualifier for the 2027 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, while Maycock, Richardson, Tucker, Honore and Riley are using the event as a warm-up for the Bowling World Cup in Hong Kong in January.
Apart from Hayward and Honore, who will be making their international debut, Bermuda’s team boasts a wealth of experience representing the island at various international events in the past.
Matthews, Maycock and Richardson have also already enjoyed success on the international stage having secured medals at the Central American and Caribbean Games and Island Games.
Bermuda’s bowlers are scheduled to depart for Nevada today.
