Leading archers showcase talent at national championships

Bermuda’s best archers showcased their sharpshooting at the National Outdoor Archery Championships on Saturday.

Among those in action were Camerin Pickering, who came close to securing a spot at the Olympics in Paris, and Jaydon Roberts, who has qualified for the Junior Pan American Games in Paraguay in May 2025.

He could well be joined in South America by Robin Selley, whose score on Saturday was enough for her to shoot in the qualifier for the Junior 2025 Pan American Games in Argentina in March.

On an overcast day with wind speeds of 19mph, gusting up to 25mph, National Archery Association of Bermuda president Ross Roberts was pleased with the number of shooters on display as the sport continues to expand on the island.

“We are pleased with the turnout of archers who competed in today’s event,” Roberts said.

“Archery continues to grow in Bermuda and during Outdoor Nationals we had a few developmental and amateur divisions to encourage our progressing archers.

“Our Yeoman and Bowman (kids) categories shows some promising upcoming archers and these kids have so much enthusiasm and potential, so we ensure they have fun competing.

“Our Amateur division participants will soon be progressing towards the 50m, 60m and 70m distances, while for our Cadets shooting at 60m, Juniors shooting at 70m and Seniors shooting at 70m, this event determines their participation in 2025 Event Qualifiers, World Cup and World Championship Events.

“Robin Selley, our Recurve Cadet archer has secured her position during this National shoot to travel to Buenos Aires, Argentina, in March 2025 to shoot in the qualifier for the Junior 2025 Pan American Games.

“Recurve Junior archer, Jaydon Roberts, qualified for the Junior 2025 Pan American Games in May 2024 and we are hoping to have Robin secure her position in March 2025 to allow them to compete in the mixed team event along with their individual matches.”

The Outdoor National Championships is the final event of the outdoor season in Bermuda but there is plenty to look forward to indoors, with archers off to Switzerland at the start of next month.

“This event ends our outdoor shooting season, and we are now preparing for upcoming indoor events,” said Trina Roberts, secretary-general of NAAB.

“The first event will be on November 1 in Lausanne, Switzerland for the World Archery Indoor Series at which archers will shoot at 18 metres.

“Camerin Pickering will be shooting in the Recurve Senior Men division, while Jaydon Roberts and Robin Selley will be shooting in the Under-21 Male and Female divisions.

“We want to thank all the archers, their supportive families, and friends for joining us at the weekend. To our volunteers and sponsors, Rustico Restaurant and Gold Point Archery, we thank you for your continued support.”
